Staying busy in summer, classes announced

A monthly column by The Vidette’s student columnist.

Hello everyone, welcome back to another edition of Dog Dayz! The month of July for me is the month that defines summer. I feel like that’s even more true when you’re in high school, and even more true when you’re in a high school sport. July let me get away from anything involved with school, and it has been nice. With this free time I have been able to make fun memories with friends and family, and I have especially been taking in the sun.

While I said I have had some free time, this time has usually come in the afternoons, because my mornings have in fact been pretty busy. Every weekday Monday-Thursday I have been weight lifting at the school, and I have gotten a lot stronger in every core part of my body. As you know this was a big goal of mine this summer. Those sessions are from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. After that I had Driver’s Ed for three weeks this month. These classes were Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to noon.

To start the month for the 4th of July my family made our annual trip out to Lake Limerick with our friends the Polers. We spent the whole day swimming, tubing, eating and more. We also played board games, pool and ping pong. At night we enjoyed the fireworks over the lake and smores at the fire. This is a time of the year I look forward to every year. We always have so much fun.

This month I also finished up my baseball season, by placing 4th at Districts. If we had gotten 3rd we would’ve been playing in Walla Walla last weekend competing for state. While I am sad our season came to an end, because I believe we had the talent to get 1st at Districts, I am happy with my Legion season. In fact, at the beginning of the season I would be playing every so often, but as time went on I gradually got more and more playing time. By the end of the season I started every game at 2nd base at Districts! I am super stoked for next spring! I had so much fun with the guys.

Drivers Ed has definitely been an experience. I am glad it is over for sure, and I learned a lot through each class. I had three drives, one every week and 3 more drives now that I am done with the classwork part of things. I still have to pass my final test at the DMV to get my license, but I am hoping with the things I learned at Drivers Ed I will pass it, and begin the wait for turning 16.

With this free time I mentioned I have spent a lot of it outside, where I should be in the summer! I have gone golfing, hiking, biking, and swimming. I golfed at Oaksridge and Highlands, with some pretty bad scores, but nevertheless it was fun to be with my friends. My family along with friends went hiking up the Wynoochee finding waterfalls and swimming in the freezing water. I have also done some memorable fun things with my friends. We’ve gone biking up the logging roads, swimming and tubing at different lakes, and probably my favorite “Tarp Whiffle Ball”. We put a huge tarp soaked with water and soap at each base, and slipped, slid, and had a blast! The nice weather has allowed me to be able to do these things, which is nice for a change.

Finally, my classes for next year were announced. I definitely have a tough schedule that will give me a run for my money on my 4.0. I am taking Spanish, Honors English, Honors Advanced Algebra, World History, Chemistry, and Weights. I am indeed taking some tougher classes, and am looking forward to the challenge. I have also been in contact with friends, comparing schedules. However, the schedules aren’t set in stone quite yet, just the classes. I am not going to put too much thought into that stuff quite yet though, because I have some summer to still enjoy! When you’re reading this I will be headed to Hawaii, the island of Maui! I’ll let you know all about it next month. But until then, enjoy your last month of summer!
