LETTER: Clearing air about Monte traffic plans

A letter to the editor by Ian Cope

Over the last year, there has been much discussion about Mayor Samuel’s proposal to build a roundabout and rest stop at the off ramp of SR 12 as it enters Montesano. In that time I have heard differing opinions concerning the wisdom of such a project. While I welcome the robust discussion of such an idea, one thing I find troubling is the spreading of information that is false and misleading. I hope this message can clear the air.

1) The decision to build a roundabout has not been made. Any assertion saying otherwise is simply not true. As the intersection of two state highways, the decision to proceed with any project would have to come from the Department of Transportation. They have not rendered an opinion at this time nor has the council passed any measure asking the WSDOT for such action.

2) There have been several opportunities to comment on this potential project. Opponents and supporters of the project have taken several opportunities to address the city council during the multiple public comment periods held at each council meeting. In addition, a community meeting on the project will be held at City Hall on Oct. 30th at 7pm. I urge any and all residents who wish to share their opinions and hear responses from design engineers and the state Department of Transportation to attend.

3) The money put aside by the state Department of Transportation is for an improvement to the intersection. In my opinion, such an improvement is needed. I don’t think a roundabout is the answer, as has been communicated by several of the council members and candidates, but I think designated turn lanes, better site lines and a more aesthetically pleasing entrance to our town is something that should be considered. The money the WSDOT has allotted could cover these improvements.

4) The intersection improvements are not linked to a rest stop. The projects are totally separate, a fact for which I am glad. While I applaud the mayor for coming up with an idea, I don’t think a rest stop is the best solution for Montesano. I have seen no evidence to suggest that those stopping to use the facilities would stay in town and I think there are better uses for that property. Sports fields and a park, a new business, something that draws people in and has the potential to create direct and indirect revenue. That is a solution I could get behind.

These are the answers to some of the most commonly asked questions surrounding the intersection project. Through our partnership with the WSDOT and our legislative partners, we have the means to make that intersection more inviting and easily navigable. This is state money that could be going to King County or a project on I-5. Instead, it is an investment in OUR community. This doesn’t happen every day and I did not see the wisdom in turning down such an investment. Nor do I see the value in spreading falsehoods and misinformation. Come to the community meeting on the 30th. Ask questions and get the answers from those who know.

Ian Cope, Montesano City Council
