It was a nailbiter but Elma prevailed on penalty kicks to pull out an Evergreen 1A League victory Oct. 17 at Davis Field.

Elma (4-2, 8-4) is now solidly in second place in the 1A league after the win.

Tenino (3-4, 6-4) got the scoring started with a goal in the 13th minute but Elma tied it up soon after with a goal from Jayla Mason on a cross from Kassedy Olson in the 24th minute.

Tenino regained the lead in the 35th minute but Brooke Sutherby tied it up again in the 65th minute on a pass from Kayli Johnson.

Sutherby, Olson, Rebeka Lensegrav and Kaelyn Burgher all scored on penalty kicks while Holli Ray came up with two big saves in the shootout.

Elma coach Scott Rockey said his team never gave up.

“They fought hard, stayed together and kept talking to each other,” he said. “That’s what it takes to win a tough game like that.”

Rockey also highlighted Johnson, Molly Johnston and Emily Newberry for their contributions.
