Montesano made it a clean sweep of rival Elma for the season with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-12) win over the Eagles in an Evergreen 1A League match on Oct. 13.

The host Eagles (3-2, 5-6) came out ready for battle early in the match. Elma scored the first four points of the match and controlled the momentum, but the Bulldogs (5-0, 11-0) ironed out any early mistakes. Montesano went on a nine-point run to take a 12-6 lead and finished the first set off on a 11-2 run to grab control of the match for good.

“Elma came out pretty strong and kept the ball alive and there were a couple of miscues on our part,” Montesano coach Debbie Gibson said. “They tend to tip, so we just tried to cover more on the tip and let a couple of those hits go that they got in the corner. We made sure we didn’t get burned on the dumps. We just kept our composure. We served the ball well and for the most part we passed the ball well.”

The undefeated Bulldogs were led offensively by Jordan Spradlin. The senior finished with 18 kills, while Shayla Floch added eight kills and served 100 percent on the night. Hannah Manley served through the first-set run to put the Bulldogs on top and finished a perfect 19-for-19 serving with three aces.

Montesano jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the second set, but Elma fought its way back into the match late. Behind the hitting of Kaylee Rambo and Jalyn Sackrider, the Eagles pulled to within five points, but couldn’t complete the comeback. Spradlin helped close the door with kills on two of the final five points of the set.

“They are a good team, but on our side, we did a really good job,” Elma coach Kendra Henry said. “That is the best I’ve seen our team play and I don’t think the score necessarily represented how well we did. We just played as a team and were being excited for everything we were doing right. There was excitement in the gym and it was fun to watch them play.”

The Bulldogs powered through the third set, scoring the first eight points and keeping at least that margin throughout the final frame on their way to victory.

Defensively, Montesano was led by setter Hannah Hatcher with 11 digs in addition to her 24 assists. Josie Toyra added 10 digs, while Josie Talley and Hailee Dierks each finished with nine digs.

“The whole team played well as a group,” Gibson said. “They all did a good job, stayed with the game plan and executed well.”

Henry cited setter Kenna Stoney for good all-around play. Elma’s Quin Mikel and Ana Perez each had 15 digs in the contest.

Montesano hosted Tenino on Tuesday, while Elma travels to Tenino on Oct. 20.
