Monte girls win, boys lose on trip to Forks

Forks handed the Bulldog boys their first league loss

FORKS — Montesano’s basketball teams enjoyed mixed success on a long trip north on Jan. 12.

Monte’s girls retained the Evergreen 1A League lead with a 65-31 rout of Forks in the second half of a co-ed doubleheader.

But Forks handed the Bulldog boys their first league loss, 49-46, earlier in the evening.

Zoee Lisherness had 17 points and seven rebounds and Zoe Hutchings 15 points and seven boards as the Bulldogs improved to 3-0 in league and 10-4 overall.

Forks trailed by only three, 16-13, early in the second quarter. But the Bulldogs responded by reeling off the next 12 points.

“I feel like we responded to their run really well and kept pushing for the rest of the game,” Montesano coach Julie Graves said.

Samantha Stanfield, who had six steals, four assists and four rebounds, was cited for a fine all-around performance.

Spartans 49, Bulldogs 46

Down 41-32 after three quarters, Montesano rallied to take a 46-45 lead in the final minute.

Forks’ Austin Flores, however, answered with a conventional three-point play with about 20 seconds remaining. The Spartans added a free throw in the final second and the Bulldogs (2-1, 11-3) were off-target with a half-court shot at the buzzer.

“They came out with a lot of energy and intensity,” Monte coach Doug Galloway said of the Spartans. “They disrupted a lot of stuff we were trying to do. You’ve got to give them all the credit in the world.”

Trevor Ridgway scored 21 points and added nine rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots for the Bulldogs. Sam Winter came up with five steals.
