OPINION: In home stretch of school year

A monthly column about life while growing up in Montesano

This month we witnessed history in the basketball program and spring sports are upon us. With the third quarter coming to a close in the school year, the home stretch to summer is here.

Spring sports have begun, which means baseball for me.

I made the varsity team and have been starting at second base most games. Our team is something special. Our goals are not only to make it to the Final Four in state, but win state. And we feel like these are reasonable goals for us.

Surprisingly the weather has been really good to us. Only one rain out all year so far, and it prevented us from going to Forks. What a shame (sarcasm).

We have only lost once to one of the best 2A schools in Chehalis. We beat 2A schools Tumwater and Centralia.

Also, the returning state champion fast pitch team is back. They lost some seniors, but are always a great team. Other sports starting this last month were girls tennis, boys soccer, girls golf, and track and field. There is always a team to support if you are looking for something to do.

When you are reading this us students will be enjoying the last break before the summer. Spring Break. My family and I are going to Palm Springs, Calif., for a few days. It is supposed to be in the 90s the whole trip, so hopefully we can bring the sun back with us. Our trip is being cut a little short compared to previous spring breaks, and that’s because of me. We have a baseball game during the break and I have to be back for that, which is a common theme throughout all the sports.

For three-sport athletes like me or any high school athlete really, our sports can take away possible times to go on vacations or trips. Winter break can be dominated by winter sports, spring break by spring sports, and the summer is super busy as well. With summer programs run by all of the sports, I usually find myself with two solid weeks off before two-a-days start up in the middle of August. Hopefully during that two week period we can get a good trip in.

I was invited to go to a leadership summit to represent my school with many of my other classmates and friends at Elma High School.

There was a speaker there by the name of Houston Kraft who spoke on leading with kindness, and really just emphasized being kind. His lecture really hit home with me and gave me a lot of great things to think about. He also made us interact with students from other schools and do uncomfortable or different things that we may not even want to do with someone from our own school. Hopefully every student who was there got something out of it and is going to do something about it, because I sure am.

One thing that stood out to me is that kindness is infectious. It is really pretty simple. The kinder I am, the more likely those around me are to be kind.

As we move into April I need to focus on keeping my grades up, playing good, hard baseball, and enjoying the sun while it lasts. I hope you do as well.
