Busy summer brings excitement, challenges

Hello everyone, welcome back to another edition of Dog Dayz.

This last month the school year came to an end, and summer began. Of course I am still busy with sports, but no homework to worry about is nice. Summer sports for me have included baseball, basketball and football. I am also working out to get stronger this summer to get ready for my sophomore year.

I am now officially a sophomore. Last month, I said I ran for class sargent of arms and I am very excited to say I won, and I am looking forward to all the fun things we will do for the class of 2020 next year.

Before school let out, I made sure all of my grades were looking good and ended up receiving a 4.0 GPA. I hope to continue the trend of 4.0s, but I realize it is only going to get tougher. We also got new lockers for next year. I got a top locker which is always the goal, but I am not near as many friends as I had hoped.

Right after school got out our football team headed for Central Washington University for football camp. It was a four-day camp, and we played two games each day. I played on the JV team and we lost one time throughout the camp. I thought we were very successful and definitely got better. Varsity had a great camp as well, also only losing once to a 4-A school. They even beat a Central Washington prospects team. Overall, Montesano had a great camp.

For 2-A Legion baseball we have won every game except one against Lower Columbia in league play. Two days after I got back from football camp in eastern Washington, I went back to eastern Washington to Selah for a four-day baseball tournament. We had a great time and it was hoot.

With all of these sports, I did have to make some tough decisions. One being whether to stay for five to six baseball games or go to Seaside basketball camp. For many reasons I ended up cutting my basketball season short and stayed. I was really hoping to go to Seaside, but I couldn’t make it work with my baseball schedule. Hopefully the schedule will work better next year.

This summer I finally turned 15 years old and have since gotten my driver’s permit. At the beginning of July, I start driver’s education, so getting my permit has been nice, because I have gotten some fairly good practice in. Before I go to driver’s ed I am hoping to get some experience with driving on the highway, and I need to get a heck of a lot better at parking. All things I will do and get better at when I go to driver’s ed, I know. However, I want to have some experience, and don’t want to be too far behind everyone else taking my course. Overall, I am super excited to get better on the roads so I am ready for my 16th birthday.

With these next two months of summer I have time to work on, improve upon and grow with many things without the worries and stresses of school work getting in the way.

I want and need to get stronger this summer. By lifting weights four or five times a week, I know I will. That will also help me with all of my sports.

I also want to hang out with my friends as much as possible. I know I won’t see them every day like I do at school, but hopefully still a lot.

I need to gain weight this summer, too. I have been burning a lot of calories so far this summer and not taking enough in. Eating more, sleeping more and hopefully growing will help me gain weight.

Finally, I want to be outside as much as possible these next two months. I want to get a lot of sun because it is a rarity here outside of summer unfortunately. I need to store up as much vitamin D as I can while it is here.

Like I said — two more months of summer. It sounds like a lot of time, but I am not convinced it is. I am pretty sure it will fly by for me with baseball playoffs, driver’s ed and weights. I will definitely work in some sunny days with friends. I hope you will too. Have a great July everyone.
