Stars shine, records fall at Grays Harbor All-County Championships

The talents of local prep track and field stars were on full display at the Ray Ryan Memorial Grays Harbor All-County Championships meet on Friday, April 15, at Jack Rottle Field in Montesano.

With notable performances from many a student-athlete, it was arguably Hoquiam thrower Tyara Straka’s display of prowess in the shot put that stood above the rest.

The state champion senior, who entered the meet with the top shot put throw in the state, raised the bar on Thursday.

Straka’s heave of 45 feet even set a new personal best and broke the meet record of 44-10 set by former Montesano great and current Oregon State Beaver Jordan Spradlin in 2016.

Straka also took first in the girls discus throw with a toss of 122-06, which would qualify as the fifth best throw in the state this season, but is over a foot short of her season-best 123-07 mark, which is currently third in the entire state.

Aberdeen’s boys scored the most points of any team at the meet with 226, cruising to a team victory over North Beach (105) and Ocosta (98), which placed second and third, respectively.

Aberdeen had multiple athletes win multiple events on the day, including senior Julian Campos (800, 1,600), senior Collin Babineau (110-meter hurdles, 300 hurdles) and senior Andrew Troeh (long jump, triple jump, high jump).

Aberdeen swept both relay races and also picked up wins by senior Gary Sherman (3,200) and sophomores JaBron Brooks (shot put) and Tyler Bates (discus), the latter of which currently owns the top discus throw in the 2A class this season.

Ocosta dominated the sprint races with senior William Idso winning the 100 and 200, while twin brother Matthew took first in the 400.

Wildcats senior Billy Jones won the pole vault with a personal-best height of 12-06, nearly 3 feet better than his closest competitor.

Montesano sophomore Gabe Bodwell won the boys javelin with a throw of 148-09, a new personal record.

Montesano won the girls competition by nearly triple digits, scoring 222 points to 126.5 for second-place Hoquiam.

The Bulldogs got event wins from Jaiden Morrison (400), Jaiden King (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Ashlyn Devereaux (long jump).

Montesano also won two of the meet’s three girls relay races, crossing the line first in the 4×100 and 4×200 races.

Aside from Straka, Hoquiam sophomore Jane Roloff swept the distance races and the Grizzlies got additional event wins from Kamryn Krohn (javelin), Katrina Jones (pole vault) and the girls 4×400 relay team.
