Wednesday Roundup: Undefeated Elma shows no signs of slowing down in rout of Hoquiam

The best advice one could give when watching the 2022 Elma Eagles boys soccer team is: Don’t blink, you might miss something.

Elma scored three goals in the first 12 minutes of the game en route to a 9-0 win over Hoquiam on Wednesday, April 20, at Davis Field in Elma.

Elma (9-0-2 overall, 9-0 1A Evergreen) took an early lead on a goal by senior forward Canon Seaberg off a feed from Valencia Mendoza just 2:01 into the game.

Mendoza scored on a cross from senior Manny Hernandez less than two minutes later and Cason Seaberg made it a 3-0 game when he scored off Mendoza’s second assist in the contest in the ninth minute.

Three minutes later, Mendoza scored the second of his five goals in the game off a feed from Canon Seaberg, putting Elma up 4-0 with less than a quarter of game time elapsed.

Mendoza scored again on a pass from midfielder Hank Doleman in the 31st minute to give the Eagles a 5-0 lead at the half.

In the second half, Elma continued to play well together — communicating and connecting on passes — which led to excellent scoring opportunities. The Eagles scored four more times over the final 40 minutes of the match, with Hernandez and senior Josue Moreno scoring a goal apiece and Mendoza adding two more goals.

“It was a good game for us and I was really encouraged to see some play and positioning executed that we have been working on in practice,” Elma head coach Carson Seaberg said. “It’s a testament to these guys that they are striving to get better every day out.”

Mendoza finished with five goals and two assists with Cason Seaberg and Hernandez each recording a goal and two assists in the contest.

Elma is currently ranked No. 5 in the latest WIAA RPI rankings and will take on the 1A Evergreen League’s second-place team — the Forks Spartans — in a key league matchup at 6 p.m. on Friday in Forks.

Hoquiam (2-8, 2-6) hosts Tenino at 5 p.m. on Friday.

Aberdeen 2, Centralia 0

Despite not playing at peak form, the Aberdeen Bobcats found a way to win in defeating Centralia 2-0 in boys soccer on Wednesday, April 20, in Centralia.

Aberdeen (7-2-1, 6-2 2A Evergreen) lacked a good first touch and crisp passing early on, resulting in a scarcity of offensive opportunities in the first half.

With the game locked in a scoreless tie at halftime, Aberdeen began to find its game. The Bobcats did a better job of controlling possession over the final 40 minutes of the match and were rewarded for their efforts.

Aberdeen senior forward Daniel Guzman ran down a ball and sent a cross toward the front of the Tigers net. The ball deflected off a Centralia defender and across the line for a 1-0 Bobcats lead in the 50th minute.

Ten minutes later, Guzman chipped a ball over the Centralia defense toward senior striker Miguel Martinez — playing in his first game in over two weeks due to injury — who beat the keeper 1-on-1 for a 2-0 Aberdeen lead.

Led by defenders Alan Alavez, Colby Mendoza and Hugo Garcia, Aberdeen kept Centralia from creating any threatening scoring chances to preserve the victory.

“We were not great at the outset, but we found our touch as the game progressed and put a lot of pressure on the Tiger defense the entire night, doing just enough to get the important win,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said.

Aberdeen sits alone in second place in the 2A Evergreen League and will host fourth-place Rochester at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

Aberdeen’s junior varsity team tied 2-2 with Centralia JV.

Juan Serrano and Austin Gomez scored the goals for Aberdeen JV.
