Kayaker rescued in Willapa Bay

Members of the U.S. Coast Guard and a Pacific County beach rescue team assisted a kayaker to safety after he overturned in Willapa Bay Sunday evening.

The kayaker, who was wearing a life jacket but not a wetsuit, used his cell phone to call 911 after capsizing, according to Petty Officer Levi Read.

Upon receiving the call at 4:52 p.m., the Coast Guard station in Astoria sent a Jayhawk helicopter to assess the situation. The Coast Guard then recommended a water evacuation by the Pacific County rescue team, which was on a jet ski.

A rescue swimmer from the helicopter crew was the first to make contact with the kayaker, who was then taken to shore by the jet ski.

Other than being cold and exhausted, Read said he wasn’t aware of any other injuries to the 50-year-old man.

Additional boat crews from the Grays Harbor and Cape Disappointment Coast Guard stations were also sent to assist with the initial search for the kayaker.

In a news release, the Coast Guard suggested that “all those who take to the water in the coming months to be prepared for any possible emergencies similar to this one. Carrying a communication device like a cellphone or a handheld radio is always recommended when heading out on the water. Also recommended is staying with your paddle craft and dressing for water temperature and not air temperature.”
