Eagles girls soccer scores trio of wins in week of action

Elma defeats Rochester, Castle Rock and La Center

The Eagles scored a trio of wins last week in girls soccer action.

Eagles 1, Warriors 0

Elma made Brooke Sutherby’s first-half goal stand up in a non-league victory over Rochester on Sept. 16 at Rochester.

Sutherby scored in the 34th minute, off a crossing pass from Molly Johnston.

Although outshooting Rochester 18-3, the Eagles (4-1-1) were unable to add to their total.

“We were knocking on their door a lot,” Eagle coach Scott Rockey said. “We had a lot of action, but the finishing wasn’t there.”

Sutherby and Johnston were cited not only for their play but their leadership in keeping the Eagles calm in a physically played match.

Elma visits Class 2A Chehalis on Tuesday. Results of that match were not available before The Vidette went to press.

Eagles 9, Rockets 0

Kassedy Olson, Sutherby and Johnston scored two goals apiece as Elma routed Castle Rock in non-league action on Sept. 14 at Castle Rock.

Jillian Bieker, Paige Knutson and Jayla Mason also scored for the Eagles (3-1-1). Goals by Olson, Bieker and Sutherby gave Elma a 3-0 halftime lead.

“Our passing has continued to be good and our finishing is coming together,” Rockey said. “We’re starting to get used to each other’s timing a little better.”

Johnston, in her second game back after recovering from an injury, drew Rockey’s praise, as did Olson and defender Rebeka Lensegrav.

Eagles 4, Wildcats 2

Defender Rebeka Lensegrav scored twice as Elma beat La Center in a non-league match Sept. 12 at Davis Field.

Lensegrav scored her first goal off an indirect kick, then volleyed one home from some 40 yards out.

Kaelyn Burgher and Kassedy Olson tallied the other two Eagle goals. Jayla Mason and Sutherby were credited with assists.

“The girls passed really well,” Rockey said. “Our possession was good and obviously we were able to find the goal this time.”

Lensegrav, Olson and Hannah Hartley were commended by Rockey for fine performances.
