ELMA —Kayli Johnson and Molly Johnston each scored in the second half as Elma came from behind to defeat Hoquiam at home on Oct. 5.

Hoquiam scored the only goal of the first half in the 35th minute, when Sadie Carlyle knocked in the rebound of a Taylor Strom shot.

The second half saw Kayli Johnson get a cross from Molly Johnston before making a touch and drilling it over the keeper’s hands for a goal in the 46th minute. Johnson and Johnston combined for another goal in the 56th minute when an assist from Johnston led to a shot by Johnson, which then ricocheted off Johnston before going in the net.

“The game was a really solid game, it was really back and forth the whole time,” said Elma coach Scott Rockey. “Nobody really had a solid upper hand in the game.”

Hoquiam coach Drew Grannemann thought his team wore down a bit in the second half.

“Overall, it was a great performance by everyone on the team,” Grannemann said. He cited goalkeeper Jade Cox for her performance and communication skills.

Rockey noted the play of Kayli Johnston and the defensive play of Rebeka Lensegrav.

“In the first half we were slow, just a little bit off of our game and in the second half we came out and were faster and were able to keep the ball on their side of the field,” Rockey said. “Do that long enough and a goal will come out for you.”
