Summer High School band marches in Monte parade

The band marched in memory of Carrie Henry, a former Montesano resident

The Sumner High School Band performed as part of this year’s Festival of Lights parade in honor of former Montesano resident Carrie Henry, who died of cancer in August.

Henry lived with her family in the Montesano and Elma area for about 12 years after moving up from California, according to her son, Robert.

She began volunteering with Montesano’s band due to her nephew’s involvement. After moving to Sumner around 2013, she delved even more deeply into supporting her family’s musical endeavors. Robert recalled how his mother and father would attend every Sumner marching practice and performance, and follow the band whenever it traveled.

“Carrie wasn’t just a volunteer with the Sumner Band,” a band remembrance provided by Robert reads. “To all she was a friend, grandmother (three, her own) and mom. She was the first to greet newcomers to the band room and make them feel at home. We’ll miss her impromptu dance performances as she guarded over the band on the streets of Sumner and during parades.”
