Port eyeing Friends Landing renovations

Citizen input leads to potential renovations at Friends Landing

Friends Landing in Montesano is being groomed for a makeover courtesy of the Port of Grays Harbor.

The Port is looking to replace the playground equipment and the track at Friends Landing spurred by suggestions from the community.

Along with updating their parks and recreation plan in 2014, the Port thought it important to ask citizens to identify aspects of the park that were in need of attention. The response was to fix the pothole-ridden track and replace the outdated playground equipment.

Alissa Shay, manager of business development at Satsop Business Park, said the next step is to secure funding for the projects.

The Port has asked the Legislature for funding.

“We won’t know how much funding we will receive until our request passes through the legislature,” Shay said.

Shay explained that the Port’s application for grant funding is low on the list of applications, as there are some 50 projects ahead of the proposed Friends Landing projects.

“Since finding out about our position, we have started looking for other opportunities for grant funding,” Shay said.

For example, the Port already has received a $5,000 grant from the Seabrook Community Foundation, and is hoping for additional funding opportunities moving forward.

Shay says that the total cost of the projects would combine to be about $200,000, with each project comprising half of the total cost. However, the Port is seeking ways to reduce the cost of replacing the track. To meet its goal, the Port plans to spend the next year fundraising.

If funding is received, the Port hopes to have new playground equipment installed by 2018, but is still unsure of a timeline for a replacement of the track.
