Mother and daughter arrested in connection with thefts from hospital district

$390,000 allegedly taken

A mother and daughter from Amanda Park have been arrested in connection with the theft of $390,000 from Harbor Medical Group, a subsidiary of Grays Harbor Community Hospital District, according to a statement released Monday by Aberdeen Police Detective Jeff Weiss.

Hospital officials announced back in July that the thefts had been discovered. Gloria Gilroy, 64, and her 45-year-old daughter Davina Gilroy, both former hospital district employees, were arrested Friday on suspicion of multiple counts of first degree theft. They have since been released. Weiss said Monday that they have not been officially charged.

“In April 2017, The Aberdeen Police Department was asked to start an investigation for Grays Harbor Community Hospital/Grays Harbor Physicians Services of an internal theft that had occurred,” said Weiss. “In July 2017, a forensic accountant audited the payroll for the hospital which revealed that more than $390,000 had been taken through direct deposits and fraudulently written checks.”

Weiss said bank records indicate the thefts started in September of 2015 when Davina started making direct deposits and depositing checks written to herself that she had access to through her payroll controller position,” said Weiss. “The thefts continued into April 2017 when Davina was confronted by staff about not paying taxes for the hospital.”
