Elma man arrested after attempting to drive over officer

No officers injured

Officers from the Elma Police Department and the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office arrested a 55-year-old Elma man after he attempted to elude officers and made an attempt to back over an officer with his vehicle Sunday night.

At about 9:55 p.m. on Sunday, an officer from the Elma Police Department recognized the driver, whose license is suspended and who also had outstanding warrants for his arrest.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver took off at high speeds, driving recklessly in the area of Highway 12 and Highway 8 interchange. The officers believed they had the suspect stopped in the area of the Latter-day Saints Church. The driver then made attempts to back over an Elma officer with his vehicle. The driver led officers at high speed into the Elma RV Park. The driver avoided attempts made to spike the vehicle’s tires before leaving the park.

Officers eventually stopped the suspect vehicle near Menzo-Haverly Road and Oakhurst Drive. Vehicles for the Sheriff’s Office and Elma Police vehicles were damaged in the incident, along with the suspect’s vehicle. The officers were not injured during the incident. The suspect was detained by a K-9 unit and arrested without further incident, but suffered minor injuries.
