ELMA — Relying on its defense in a match filled with dramatic momentum shifts, Elma rallied for a 25-14, 14-25, 15-25, 25-9, 15-9 victory over Hoquiam in Evergreen 1A League play Oct. 5 at Elma.

Winning coach Kendra Henry cited the defense of Kenna Stoney and Kali Rambo with helping to turn the tide. Stoney finished with 12 kills, 18 assists and 17 digs. Rambo also had 17 digs.

Jalyn Sackrider led Eagle hitters with eight kills and eight blocks.

“Hoquiam came out and played energized and played great defense,” Henry said. “But I was proud of how we fought through the adversity of losing those two sets and came back and closed it out.”

“For two games, we played great,” HHS coach Heather Bozich said. “The games we didn’t win, we did not play with confidence.”

Hoquiam’s Karlie Krohn had 20 digs to go with seven kills. Kamimi Papp had 15 kills, ReyLynn Dunn 13 digs and Kacey Pelan 27 assists for the Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies took the JV match, 25-23, 25-16.

On Tuesday, the Eagles (3-0, 8-1) travel to Forks, while Hoquiam (1-2, 4-6) hosts Tenino.
