Monte’s Tibbitt nabs title at North Beach Bash

Tibbitt is a first-year wrestler

OYEHUT — With snow in the forecast, wrestlers from across the Twin Harbors headed to the beach. None of the wrestlers returned with a tan, but seven athletes finished the day with individual titles.

Aberdeen’s Edgar Salazar (120), Dylan Landeglos (182) and Andres Cisneros (220), Willapa Harbor’s Joseph Lewis (132) and Jack Jordan (140), Montesano’s Jordan Tibbitt (113) and North Beach’s Seth Bridge (285) all ended the day as champions in their respective weight classes at North Beach’s Bash at the Beach wrestling tournament at the House of Pain on Saturday, Jan. 7.

Klahowya finished with three individual champions and took home the team title with 178 total points. Willapa Harbor edged out Aberdeen for second place with 156 1/2 points to the Bobcat total of 150. Ocosta finished fourth with 141 points, followed by Hoquiam with 134 and Montesano with 121 1/2. The host Hyaks finished eighth out of the 12 teams with 60 points.

Aberdeen finished with three titles including Salazar who defeated teammate Angel Cisneros in the 120-pound final. Salazar jumped ahead with a takedown in the first period and led 2-1 going into the third period when he earned a reversal to pave the way to a 6-2 win.

The Bobcats’ two other titles came in much more one-sided matches. Andres Cisneros earned a first round pin against Willapa Harbor’s Ricky Robineat, while Dylan Landelos controlled his match against Montesano’s Tanner Rossmaier to the tune of 14-6.

“We are kind of in a rut right now and we probably should have done better,” Aberdeen head coach Jimmy Martin said. “We just hit a midseason rut right now, but we will get better. It was nice to see Salazar get back on top. With Salazar and Angel Cisneros the match was so close and it is nice to see that. I’m happy with the individuals that won titles, but we have a lot of work to do.”

Rossmaier, Andy Fry (106) and Kai Olson (170) all came out on the losing end of finals matches for the Bulldogs, but Montesano was not shut out as Tibbitt defeated Hoquiam’s Alex Houbregs. Tibbitt led 6-3 going into the third period. Houbregs earned a reversal to start the final period and cut the lead to one point. Houbregs allowed an escape with just under a minute to go to give himself a chance to tie the match up with a takedown, but Tibbitt fought off several shots from Houbregs to hold on for a 7-5 decision.

“We had a lot of young and inexperienced kids, but we were pretty excited with their showings today,” Montesano head coach Jeff Klinger said. “(Tibbitt) is a first year wrestler who is a senior and is just starting to put stuff together. He didn’t have much technique and he was kind of brawler, but he is starting to put it together. His strength is there, it is just picking up on the technique.”
