Montesano’s baseball team split a pair of games late last week.

Dawson St. Jean’s two-run homer capped a six-run first inning that ignited Mark Morris past Montesano in a non-league game on April 21 at Longview. The Bulldogs lost 11-4.

The Bulldogs (6-3) were guilty of six errors, although none of those came in first. The Class 2A Monarchs did all their scoring in the first three frames.

“The first couple of innings, we just weren’t ready to play,” Monte coach Mike Osgood said. “Once we settled down, we played with them. We just couldn’t get out of the hole we created.”

Sawyer Rhoden delivered three hits, including a pair of doubles, to pace the Bulldog attack. Osgood also cited the relief pitching of Mason Lutz, Payson Parker and Dakoyta Reninger.

The Bulldogs return to Evergreen 1A League game Tuesday at Elma.

Nearly hitting for the cycle, Matthew Plato drove in five runs as Montesano trounced Tenino in an Evergreen 1A League game April 20 at Tenino.

The Bulldogs did all their scoring in the first three innings following a 45-minute rain delay.

Plato delivered a two-run double in the first inning, a run-scoring single in the second and a two-run homer in the third inning as the Bulldogs (6-2 overall) improved to 6-0 in league play.

Austin Peterson and Reninger combined to pitch a two-hitter.

“I thought Austin pitched a great game while pitching ahead in the counts and allowing our defense to make the plays behind him,” Osgood said.
