Monte season over

Coach applauds improvement throughout season

Montesano’s rain-shortened tennis season came to an end at the District IV 1A tennis tournament at the Vancouver Tennis Center on May 19.

Rachel Ayres was the only Bulldog singles player to get a win at the meet with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sophia Ozeruga of King’s Way in the first round. However, Ayres came up against a tough draw with the overall top seed Bailee Wallace of Three Rivers Christian. Wallace defeated Ayres 6-1, 6-0.

Montesano’s other singles player, Emily Bodenhamer lost her first round match, 6-1, 6-0, to Castle Rock’s Hanna Lair.

The Bulldog’s top doubles team of Corrina Zapata and Jessica Taborski defeated King’s Way’s Jordan Veltkamp and Maddie Lameh, 6-4, 6-0, in their first match, but came up short against Castle Rock’s Jenna Lafontaine and Megan Keeling in a 6-2, 6-1 loss.

Montesano’s other doubles team of Danika Peterson and Alexa Couch lost their first round match, 6-1, 6-2, to Tenino’s Ximen Ontiveros and Ally Vestal.

“Everybody played pretty much to their potential, we just ran against better teams,” Montesano head coach Theresa Helland said. “Overall, everyone improved this season and I’m excited to have most of my players back next season.”
