Monte girls soccer splits pair to King’s Way, Northwest

Goals scored in final minutes determine results of both games

The lady Bulldogs split a pair in soccer action last week, first falling to King’s Way Christian before rebounding to win against Northwest School of Seattle.

Bulldogs 1, Haus 0

Samantha Stanfield scored with two minutes remaining on Sept. 16 to give Montesano a non-league victory over the Northwest School of Seattle at Rottle Field.

The Bulldogs (3-1) outshot the Haus 10-0, but couldn’t break the scoring ice until the 78th minute. Stanfield launched what was intended to be a crossing pass, but it curved into the net.

Montesano’s Brooke Streeter had a prime scoring chance midway through the second half accidentally blocked by a teammate inside the penalty area.

“We’re making attacks and defending well,” Montesano coach Fidel Sanchez said. “We’re just not getting to the area where we need to be where they are high-percentage shots.”

Outside defender Hallie Stubb was cited by Sanchez for a strong performance.

Montesano’s junior varsity won at Rochester, 4-0. Ellie Jones scored twice and Cassidy Golding and Ava Poler had one goal apiece for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs visit Class 2A Centralia on Tuesday. Results of that match were not available before The Vidette went to press.

Knights 1, Bulldogs 0

King’s Way Christian scored in the final minute of regulation to edge Montesano in a non-league contest Sept. 14 at Vancouver.

With time running down, the Knights launched a long throw-in that a Bulldog defender attempted to clear with a header. The ball bounced backward, however, and a Knight one-touched it in from close range.

Possession was virtually even, with King’s Way controlling the first half and Montesano taking command after intermission. King’s Way had a 5-4 edge in shots on-goal.

“We did some good things in the second half,” Sanchez said. “We were just unlucky in the last minute.”

Montesano’s Samantha Stanfield was cited for all-around play.
