Monte defeats Forks in opening league play, continues undefeated season

Bulldogs take to the air to beat Forks

Unbeaten Montesano went to the air in opening Evergreen 1A League play in impressive fashion.

Completing 18 of 22 passes for 242 yards, the Bulldogs pulled away in the second half for a 44-6 victory over Forks in an Evergreen 1A League football opener on Sept. 29 at Forks.

The Spartans, who also entered the game unbeaten, limited Bulldog ace running back Carson Klinger to 84 yards rushing.

But quarterback Trevor Ridgway completed 16 of 20 passes for 177 yards. Klinger connected with Kooper Karaffa on a 56-yard scoring pass and backup quarterback Shaydon Farmer also completed his only pass.

“They were kind of spying on (Klinger), so that opened up the passing game,” Monte coach Terry Jensen explained.

Up 21-6 at the half, the Bulldogs (1-0, 5-0) concluded the game with 23 unanswered points. Klinger took Ridgway’s 19-yard scoring pass before passing to Karaffa for the aforementioned TD in the third quarter.

Jordan King’s 23-yard field goal and Klinger’s 22-yard run in the fourth quarter concluded the scoring.

Ridgway passed to Klinger for 16 yards and Teegan Zillyett for 21 yards for first-half touchdowns. The Bulldog quarterback also scored from 1 yard out to open the scoring.

Zillyett was in on 15 tackles, while Sam Winter and Alex Mesquita had interceptions for the Bulldogs. Winter also ran the ball effectively.

“We just played really, really well because Forks is a pretty decent team,” Jensen concluded.

The Bulldogs will entertain Class 2A R.A. Long in their homecoming game Friday.
