Eagles have winning week in soccer action

Eagles defeat Tenino, Hoquiam

Elma won a pair of games last week, including a blanking of Tenino.

Eagles 11, Beavers 0

On Senior Night, Elma accomplished something it hasn’t done in more than a decade — clinch a share of the Evergreen 1A League title — with a rout over Tenino at Davis Field on May 3.

Trace Thompson, Adonas Torres and Martin Baltazar each scored twice for the Eagles (6-2, 8-7-1), who clinched a share of the league title.

“A league title and playoff seeding are two different things,” Elma head coach Carson Seaberg said. “We’ve finished second overall multiple times, but to get a share of the title, that’s a big deal.”

Carlos Bautista, Colin Decker-Hicks, Jose Torres, Bastien Maseille and Alex Salas also scored for Elma. Thompson added three assists as well.

Eagles 3, Grizzlies 2 (OT)

Thompson scored two minutes into overtime as Elma completed a remarkable turnaround by edging Hoquiam in an Evergreen 1A League showdown on May 2 at Davis Field.

Elma’s Adonis Torres blocked a Hoquiam clearing pass on one of the first possessions of overtime. Thompson beat the Grizzly goalkeeper to the loose ball and slid about an 8-yard shot into the corner of the net.

After giving up a goal on Hoquiam’s opening possession last week, the Eagles needed only 1:48 to open the scoring Tuesday. Taking a pass from Thompson, Torres curled about a 20-yard shot into the net.

The Eagles made it 2-0 about 10 minutes later. After a handball call gave the Eagles a penalty kick, Thompson buried the spot kick.

The Grizzlies answered in the 25th minute. Connor Darras dribbled from midfield to about the 18-yard line, crossing a pass to Andy Garcia. The latter one-timed it into the net.

Hoquiam equalized on a near-identical play about five minutes into the second half. Naz Mazariegos scored this one, off a Darras assist.

In retrospect, Seaberg said the first goal was particularly critical.

“That gives you confidence,” he said. “Also, our defense was much better. I told my team going back, you have to go hard for the full 80 minutes and you have to be structurally sound. For the most part, we were structurally sound throughout the game.”

He cited Thompson, Torres, Doug Westcott and steady senior fullback Isaac Horton for particularly fine performances.

“I was disappointed in the first 10 minutes. We should never go on the road and play like that,” HHS coach Fidel Sanchez said. “After that we settled down and we battled. We played well (but) we didn’t play a complete good game.”

Sanchez credited James Courneya and Juventino Perez with fine performances.
