Work resumes on US 12

Work by heavy equipment operators at two sites on the highway were put on hold by strike.

Work is back up to full speed at two construction sites on U.S. Highway 12 in Grays Harbor County.

“Contractor crews are back at work now (and working over the weekend to place the culvert pieces),” Christina Werner, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation Olympic Region said in an email. “While we did lose a few days, we remain optimistic of completing the work this season.”

Work at sites west of Montesano and near McCleary stopped because of a heavy construction equipment operators union strike.

The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 302 stopped work in Western Washington after its members voted against contract offers. At the site outside Montesano, work stopped completely. But some work was able to continue near McCleary without the heavy equipment workers.

A statement posted Thursday on the union website reads, “A 3rd Tentative Agreement was reached for the Western (Washington) Master Labor Agreement, and members are to stand down on all picketing actions and return to regular work status effective tomorrow, September 7th.”

No details about the contract were available.
