Senator seeks pages for legislative session

Van De Wege asks 14- to 16-year-olds interested in government to apply

Attention 14-year-olds through 16-year-olds: The state Senate wants you.

Sen. Kevin Van De Wege (D-Sequim) called for students who live in the expansive 24th Legislative District to try the program.

“Our Legislature has one of the finest page programs in the country, and I strongly encourage as many young people as possible to take advantage of it,” Van De Wege said. “Whether on the Senate floor, or in lawmakers’ offices, or in the page classes they attend, they get to see the workings of our government in a way few people do.”

Students can spend a five-day work week immersed in the legislative process.

The 24th District includes most of Grays Harbor County and the Olympic Peninsula north of U.S. Highway 12.

“The interactive learning experience includes classes focused on topics like budget writing and the lawmaking process, with pages ultimately creating their own bills in a mock committee setting,” a release from Van De Wege states. “The educational experience is further bolstered by guest speakers, and the pages’ maroon coats and credentials allow them access to all parts of the Capitol Campus.”

The 60-day legislative session begins Jan. 13. Applications should be submitted no later than five weeks before the end of the legislative session. The session is scheduled to end March 12.

Applicants must have permission from a parent or guardian and obtain a recommendation from a teacher and the applicant’s school’s principal.

Financial assistance is available for those who qualify. More information on the page program and how to apply is available on the Washington Legislature’s website at tinyurl.com/WA-Pages-2020.
