Problems force partial closure of rest area

Portable toilets on site. RV dumping not allowed until further notice.

Parts of the eastbound state Route 8 rest area east of Elma are closed until further notice.

The rest area is experiencing water supply problems.

“Our maintenance crews are working now to address a facilities improvement request to replace the well, casing and wiring associated with this issue,” WSDOT spokeswoman Christina Werner said in an email. “It’s potentially an expensive repair, but we won’t know estimates or timeline for repairs for the next several weeks.”

In the meantime, portable toilets have been brought to the site. However, there is no recreational vehicle dumping at the site.

“Over the weekend, maintenance crews for the Washington State Department of Transportation responded immediately to water issue that intermittently closed the restroom facilities to travelers,” a release from WSDOT states. “There is no water or RV dumping services at this time. In the interim, portable bathrooms are available while crews work to remedy the situation.”

The WSDOT already planned to close the rest area from 7 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, through 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, for maintenance and vegetation control. This closure and maintenance work will continue as planned.
