Monte traffic forum set for Oct. 30

Plans to be engineered from traffic control analysis, presented to public at forum

A public forum is being planned for Oct. 30 to discuss a traffic revision for Montesano.

What once was a planned roundabout, with rough engineer drawings, now is being referred to as a “traffic revision” and city staff is keeping tight lipped about the potential designs of that traffic revision.

The city has been looking to tackle traffic issues where the Highway 12 westbound off ramp meets Main Street near Monte Square.

It’s not currently clear what the traffic revision will look like.

City Chief Financial Officer Doug Streeter said a traffic control analysis needs to be completed and submitted to the Department of Transportation. Using the traffic control analysis, plans will be engineered and those plans will be presented to the public during the public forum.

“This is a DOT intersection so it is truly up to them, but since it is publicly funded, there will be an opportunity for input,” Streeter said on Sept. 19. “I would assume they will take into consideration any concerns from the public, but ultimately it will be their call.”

When the city first floated plans for a roundabout at the intersection, several council meetings were attended by members of the public opposed to a roundabout.

Those opposed to a roundabout at that intersection noted their concerns about semi truck traffic, confusion for drivers, and traffic stopped for passing trains backing into the roundabout and bringing all traffic at the intersection to a standstill.

The city is working with the Department of Transportation to settle the time of the public forum.
