East County police academy seeking participants

Learn why officers do what it is they do

The East Grays Harbor County Citizen’s Police Academy is accepting applications.

Officers will show attendees “what policing is all about,” according to a release from the Elma Police Department. Applications are available through the Elma, McCleary and Montesano police departments or from the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office.

“This academy is taught by your local law enforcement officers so attendees can hear firsthand what their role is in your community,” Elma Police Chief Susan Shultz said. “The Citizen’s Police Academy will give citizens access to information on how law enforcement functions, and what they can do to improve safety in their own communities.”

The academy runs 6-9 p.m. Wednesday nights with some Saturday events from Feb. 5 through March 28. Classes include traffic investigations, domestic violence, drug investigations, K-9 demonstrations and emergency management. Field trips include outings to the 911 dispatch center, the county coroner’s office, and the Grays Harbor jail

The agencies involved hope to provide residents with a better understanding and appreciation of the challenges officers face.

Only 30 people are allowed to take part. For more information, contact a participating agency or contact Sgt. Josh Wheeler at wheeler@cityofelma.com or 360-482-3131.
