Citizens academy begins Feb. 7

Lacks enough registered students, could be canceled

Time is running out to sign up for the Grays Harbor County Citizens Police Academy.

The academy is free and the first class will be held on Feb. 7. Classes will be held on Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at the Elma Fire Department station (112 N. 2nd St., Elma). Classes continue through March 28.

With the first class quickly approaching, Elma Police Chief Susan Shultz has cautioned that the academy could be canceled if there isn’t enough interest. Currently, not enough people have registered for the academy.

Applications are being accepted on a first-come basis, and classes are limited to 30 students. To get an application, contact the Elma, Montesano or McCleary police departments, or the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office.

The academy will present opportunities to visit the 911 dispatch center, the Grays Harbor County Coroner’s Office and the Grays Harbor County Jail. Participants will get first-hand experience in split second decision making.

“This academy is taught by your local law enforcement officers so attendees can hear firsthand what their role is in your community,” Chief Shultz said. “The Citizen Police Academy will give citizens access to information on how law enforcement functions and what they can do to improve safety in their own communities.”

The program is intended to provide a better understanding and appreciation of the types of challenges officers face daily.
