Satsop School is old.

That’s kind of an understatement, but true. It was built in 1902, and the basic structure has had very little change during those 100-plus years.

Last year the heating system was upgraded and each of the rooms has a ductless heat pump. Then over Winter Break another awesome change took place when our windows, our old, wooden framed, rotten windows, were removed and thermal paned ones were installed.

The basic character of the building is still intact, but the improvements are wonderful. The staff would like to thank the school board and the business agent for their hard work on making these improvements possible.

We would also like to recognize some of our students for their kindness and helpfulness around school with the “Caught Being Good” award. This week the winners were three girls: Adamariez Santoyo, Saige Roberts and Mercedes Carter. Thanks, girls. We are proud of you.

Mrs. Batten has organized the “St. Jude’s Math-a-thon” for several years. This year some 15 kids participated, and these kids collected $1,247. The money has been sent to the St. Jude’s hospital to help fund cancer treatment for children. Such a worthwhile cause.

January is kind of a bleak month, because at school there are really no special events, unless you want to consider the end of the semester an event. So, it has been our tradition for countless years to observe National Hat Day. We always celebrate it on a Friday (it really doesn’t matter when it falls). Friday, Jan. 20 will be the observance of National Hat Day at our school. As always, it will be fun.
