It was basically business as usual at the June 19 Elma City Council meeting.
The Elma council unanimously approved Rognlin’s Inc.’s first pay request for the East Main Street project .
The approved request for $266,082 is for mobilization, record drawings, traffic control, removal of structures and obstructions, drain rock, crushed surfacing top course, crush surfacing base course, corrugated P.E. storm sewer pipe, perforated corrugated P.E. pipe, catch basin type 1, catch basin type 1L, stormwater treatment system, shoring or extra excavation and an illumination system.
The improvements to the street will be done by Gibbs & Olson of Longview. According to the Gibbs & Olson website, the improvements include a reconstruction and widening of 2,100 feet of roadway as well as updates to sidewalks, drainage and illumination.
The council unanimously approved a resolution for a six-year street plan for 2017 based on recommendations from public works director Jim Starks. The resolution must be submitted annually by the end of June if the city plans to seek grant funding.
Elma Fire Department Chief Tyson Boling received unanimous approval from the council to purchase an automated external defibrillator (AED), a thermal imaging camera and a gas detector testing machine all from the equipment budget.
A concerned citizen spoke on the issue of drug paraphernalia found throughout the city and its parks, and requested further action be taken by the city in disposing of and preventing discarded used paraphernalia.
Elma council has scheduled a work session for June 26 at 6 p.m. to discuss an ordinance relating to zoning that would allow retail marijuana sales within city limits. The meeting is open to the public.
