CENTRALIA — The Montesano boys wrestling team and the Aberdeen girls wrestling team each finished in the top four at the Centralia Tiger Classic wrestling meet on Saturday, Dec. 10.
The Bulldogs had two individual champions and five wrestlers finish in the top three individually to total 114 points as a team. Battle Ground won the boys team competition with 152 points. North Beach finished in 15th place with 28 points.
Montesano’s Jacob Ellefson won the individual title at 126 pounds and Tony Williams captured the title in his first tournament of the year with a first-place finish at 138 pounds. Tyler Izatt (132) and Austin Cain (160) each took second, while Andy Fry tied for third at 106 pounds for the Bulldogs.
“We were missing four varsity scorers,” Monte coach Jeff Klinger said. “The guys that were there wrestled well. Once we get everybody shuffled around and in the lineup, we expect good things. We are young. We have some kids that have done great things in the past, but it is a brand new year and you have to put in the work.”
North Beach’s Seth Bridge won the 285-pound title with a third-round pin.
The Bobcats had six wrestlers finish in the top four to rack up 122 team points and finish second behind Federal Way’s 175 points. Hoquiam finished tied with Kamiak for 15th with 36 points. North Beach tied for 27th with Bonney Lake with 15 points.
Aberdeen’s Emily Wharton was the only Bobcat to finish the day at the top of the podium with a first-round pin to win the title at 235 pounds.
“We are working hard with what we have,” HHS head coach Buck Giles said. “We’re down with injuries and eligibility to have all of our wrestlers available, so we’re working hard.”
Giles cited Elyse Goulet, Bianca Lopez and Mercedes Pinnell for their performances.
