Monte at Streeter tourney

SEQUIM — Montesano swept three of the top four places at the Duke Streeter Memorial Golf Tournament on April 20 at the Peninsula Golf Club.

Monte’s Macey Wecker and Mylaina Parker won the tourney, contested in a two-person scramble format. Glory Grubb and McKenna Miller placed third and Lauren Denholm and Morgan Malizia took fourth.

The Bulldogs also had the lowest combined team score. Sequim, Shelton and Port Angeles also competed.

“The girls had another great day on the course today,” Monte assistant coach Jon F. Parker said. “They were able to partner up with a teammate and have some fun.”

The Bulldogs visit Capital on Thursday.

Peyton Poler had four hits for the Bulldogs (9-1), while Lindsay Pace and winning pitcher Samantha Stanfield added three hits apiece.

Monte’s Payton Kersker delivered a bases-loaded pinch-hit single in the fifth inning to help break open the game.

While noting that his team benefited in part from the artificial turf, Montesano coach Pat Pace cited his team for making consistent contact.

TENINO — A two-run sixth inning lifted Tenino past Elma in an Evergreen 1A League contest on April 20 at Tenino.

The Eagles (1-4, 4-7) scrapped back from a 5-1 deficit to take a short-lived 7-5 lead after 3 1/2 innings. They were unable to add to that total, however, in the late innings as Tenino rallied.

“We left 10 guys on base. The last few innings, we had opportunities with guys in scoring position and couldn’t come through with the clutch hit,” Elma coach Jim Hill reported. “I thought we struck out too many times.”

Carter Jacobson and Brady Shriver drove in two runs apiece for the Eagles. Jacobson, at catcher, and shortstop Colten French were cited for defense.

The Eagles visited Montesano on Tuesday. Results of that match were not available before The Vidette went to press.
