A sloppy trail didn’t stop Elma’s Dylan Volz from running a career-best time to win a multi-school meet at Vance Creek Park in Elma on Oct. 13.

Volz ran away from the field at 18:16 to win the race, leading the Eagles to a team win over Hoquiam, 22-35. Hoquiam’s Savannah Lutz won the girls race.

“I thought Dylan ran a great race,” Elma head coach Dave Beeler said. “With the condition of the course and the weather, he ran his best all-time race. (Drew Fisher) came in fifth and ran a (personal best) as well. Overall, I thought the team ran really strong and stepped up in the weather.”

“Savannah had the lead for quite a while before winning,” Hoquiam head coach Carly Giles said. “There were no injuries and most everyone ran for fun, some even sliding on their bellies to finish their races in the rain.”

Giles cited Oscar Hoya and Carlos Juarez, who finished third and fourth overall in the boys race.

On Oct. 20, both teams will travel to Lake Sylvia Park in Montesano for the Evergreen 1A League meet.
