The Elma Eagles rebounded from their first lost of the season with a straight-set victory over the defending 1A Division IV champions last Thursday.

Though each game was close, Elma (3-1) defeated the Warriors 25-23, 25-18 and 25-23.

Senior standout Quin Mikel led Elma with 13 digs and 15 kills from her outside hitter position.

Middle blocker Jalyn Sackrider had nine kills and 10 digs while Kali Rambo made her season debut with seven kills and 25 digs.

“She played well,” Elma head coach Kendra Dunn said of Rambo. “She had a lot of digs and was real scrappy.”

Setter Ella Moore was the main Eagle feeding the ball to the hitters, recording 26 assists to lead Elma while adding 13 digs.

“We had a tough game (in a loss to Castle Rock) on Tuesday and talked about playing our game with good energy and staying focused,” Dunn said of the victory. “We came out a little slow at first but put it together. … I think they responded well (to Tuesday’s loss). They had some rough patches, but they came out aggressive and wanted to win. Our mindset was to play all out.”

Elma travels to Centralia to take on the Tigers at 7 p.m. on Monday.

Castle Rock 3, Elma 0

Elma struggled against the defending Division IV champion Castle Rock in a straight-set loss on Sept. 17 at Castle Rock High School.

Elma lost 25-14, 25-15 and 25-15 to the Rockets (2-0)

Elma outside hitter Quin Mikel had 10 kills and 15 digs while setter Ella Moore added 16 assists and nine digs for an Eagles team that head coach Kendra Henry said “had some good moments, but couldn’t tie them together.”

“Castle Rock is a really strong opponent. They did a really good job and are very scrappy,” Henry said. “There are some positives we can take out of it, but definitely some things we need to work on.”

Montesano 3, Rochester 0

Montesano got six kills from Jessica Stanfield and nine assists from Janessa Otterstetter todefeat the Rochester Warriors in straight sets on Tuesday at Rochester High School.

McKynnlie Dalan added three blocks and Mylaina Parker had seven digs for Monte (2-1), which won 25-20, 25-17 and 25-12.

Montesano hosted Morton-White Pass on Monday. Those results were not available for this edition.

Montesano 3, King’s Way Christian 0

Montesano forward Jaiden Morrison scored two goals as the Bulldogs controlled the pace of play in a 3-0 victory over King’s Way Christian on Thursday in Vancouver.

Monte midfielder Brooke Streeter opened the scoring in the 10th minute by dribbling upfield and ripping a right-to-left shot past the Knights’ goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead.

Leading 1-0 after halftime, Morrison took a cross from freshman midfielder Annabelle Estrada and scored on a shot from inside the box to double Monte’s lead in the 50th minute.

Morrison completed the scoring by blistering a shot just inside the near post for a 3-0 lead in the 70th minute.

According to Montesano head coach Fidel Sanchez, the Bulldogs (3-2) were in control most of the night.

“Our girls controlled the midfield very well and that determined the possession time being in our favor,” Sanchez said after his team outshot KWC 15-3 and had six corner-kicks in the game. “We told the girls at the half that we had a lot of possession, but we wanted to make sure it turned into goals.”

Montesano’s junior varsity team won 2-0 over Castle Rock at home on Thursday.

Montesano faced Centralia at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Centralia High School. That game ended too late for this edition

Montesano 3, Rochester 0

Montesano benefited from an own goal and put the game out of reach with two second-half goals in a 3-0 victory Sept. 17 at Rochester High School.

Montesano went into halftime with a 1-0 lead and added to their lead with a Sierra Birdsall goal in the 54th minute to put the Bulldogs up 2-0 early in the second half.

Anna Ayres scored 10 minutes later for the Bulldogs with a shot from the edge of the box to give her team a 3-0 lead.

Bulldogs head coach Fidel Sanchez said it was good to see his team return to form after back-to-back losses to Tumwater and WF West in their last two matches.

“We had a really good tournament in Cashmere and went into a bit of a lull after that,” he said. “Tonight was a big improvement on how to move the ball and attack in space.”

Tumwater 8, Elma 0

Elma was shutout in a 8-0 road loss Sept. 17 to Tumwater.
