ELMA — Scoring twice in the opening 10 minutes, Montesano trounced rival Elma in an Evergreen 1A League opener on Sept. 26 at Davis Field.

Samantha Stanfield had a hand in both of Monte’s first two goals. She needed only two minutes to open the scoring with a direct kick from 20 yards out in the second minute. Eight minutes later, she sent a through ball that Brooke Streeter converted.

Zoee Lisherness scored in each half for the Bulldogs (1-0, 6-1-2). Anna Ayres added the final goal, stealing the ball from a defender before wheeling and sending a shot into the upper right corner of the net.

Ayres received Monte’s Player of the Match award.

The speedy Bulldogs had the Eagles (0-1, 4-3-2) scrambling throughout.

“We’ve been preaching movement going forward,” Bulldog coach Fidel Sanchez said. “We found open space multiple times. The girls are so good about moving into space and that creates quality touches and quality shots.”

“They’re a really fast team,” Elma coach Scott Rockey said. “We tried to adapt and put out the fires, but we couldn’t put out enough fires.”

Jillian Bieker and Emily Newberry drew Rockey’s praise.

Ellie Jones scored the hat trick as the Bulldogs took the JV match, 4-2.

Bulldogs 3, Beavers 2

MONTESANO — Brooke Streeter’s two goals helped Montesano overcome a rare deficit to beat undefeated Tenino while playing at home on Sept. 28.

Tenino put up the only goal of the first half in the 27th minute when a miscommunication occurred between Montesano’s defenders and goalkeeper. Montesano coach Fidel Sanchez called it “an uncharacteristic mistake.”

The Bulldogs bounced back in the second half when Zoee Lisherness eluded defenders and shot the ball into the opposite side of the net for a goal.

Streeter took Montesano (2-0, 7-1-1) the rest of the way when she managed to lose defenders before putting the ball into the far side of the net for a 52nd minute goal.

Streeter scored again in the 62nd minute when she capitalized on a pass through the middle from Samantha Stanfield for the winning goal.

Sanchez noted the play of Sophie Barre, who came in as a substitute. Barre and Streeter were named the players of the match.
