Elma boys results vary

Eagles top Gulls, fall to Hawks, Templestowe

Elma’s boys basketball team held a trio of matches last week and returned a mixed bag of results.

Hawks 48, Eagles 34

Mount Rainier Lutheran pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Elma in a non-league game on Dec. 9 at Elma.

The Hawks led by only five (29-24) after three periods.

“They got to the line a bunch (the Hawks were 15-of-28 from the stripe) and that was the difference,” Elma coach Jeff Niemi said.

Cody Vollan had 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots for the Eagles (1-4). Elma’s Raiden Aho scored 10 points in the first varsity start.

Niemi cited Ray Billerback for defense.

Templestowe 59, Eagles 35

The touring Templestowe team from Australia beat Elma on Dec. 8 at Elma.

“The game came down to shooting,” Niemi reported. “Rebounding numbers were similar; turnovers weresimilar. We just shot 30 percent and them 50 percent. They were very good and skilled.”

Raiden Aho came off the bench to score eight points for the Eagles (1-4).

Eagles 43, Gulls 37

Vollan scored 17 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as Elma notched its first win by topping Raymond innon-league action on Dec. 5.

The Gulls roared back from a 24-12 halftime deficit to tie the game at 28 after three periods, but the Eagles (1-2)regrouped to take command early in the fourth quarter. Vollan hit all four of his free throws in the final period.

“We got stops and executed well in the fourth, then hit our foul shots at the end,” Elma coach Jeff Niemi said. “Foul shootingand rebounding was the difference in the game.”

Elma’s Brady Johnston had three assists and a couple of steals to go with his eight points. Niemi also cited the play ofCarter Jacobson.

“We turned up the pressure on them in the second half and got the momentum,” Raymond coach Mike Tully said. “But wecouldn’t keep it going and we were trying to play catch-up at the end.”

Marcus Anderson and Kedrick Collins shared Raymond scoring honors with 12 points apiece.
