Eagles surrender two matches

Illness, injury and rain dampen Elma’s efforts

Cougars 166, Eagles 200

ELMA — Led by Nate Kutch’s 38, talented Seton Catholic beat short-handed Elma in a Southwest Washington 1A League contest Thursday, Sept. 22, at Oaksridge Golf Course.

Trace Thompson and Cody Robinette shared Eagle scoring honors with 47s.

“We were a bit short-handed today due to illness and injury, so a couple of our freshmen got some varsity experience,” Elma coach Rich Walker said.

The Eagles faced rival Montesano on Tuesday (Sept. 27) at Oaksridge.

Seton Catholic (166) — Nate Kutch 38, Sean Ball 40, Tyler Davis 47, Nick Lamberton 43, Andrew Parker 45, John Trafalis 47.

Elma (200) — Trace Thompson 47, Cody Robinette 47, Kilian Acuff 50, Cody Williams 58, Zeke Mueller 56, Blake Hedrick 61.

Grizzlies 151, Eagles 230

At Highland Golf Course, Hoquiam had three golfers crack 40 after a weather delay lengthened the Evergreen 1A League match with Elma on Sept. 20.

The Grizzlies’ John Sand earned medalist honors with a 34, with teammates Ryan Cole (37) and Josh Burgher (39) all finishing with sub-40 scores.

The match was suspended for 40 minutes for a weather delay, which resulted in the cancellation of the junior varsity matches. The varsity golfers returned to the course and finished play without incident.

“The kids are playing steady,” HHS head coach Larry Dublanko said. “When the varsity went back out, sometimes it is tough getting back into the groove. We never really had a ton of rain. Today was a good chance to challenge ourselves after the delay.”

Elma’s Trace Thompson led his group with a 51.

Hoquiam (151) — John Sand 34, Parker McCormick 46, Ryan Cole 37, Tate Witherby 48, Josh Burgher 39, Braden Dayton 41.

Elma (230) — Trace Thompson 51, Killian Acuff 65, Barrett Barbidge 57, Cody Williams 57, Bastion Marseille 68, Russ Hensley 67.
