Eagles can’t maintain comeback, fall to spartans

64-46

Spartans 64, Eagles 46

ELMA — League-leading Forks pulled away in the fourth quarter to subdue Elma in an Evergreen 1A League contest Friday at Elma.

Outscoring the Spartans 15-9 in the third quarter, the Eagles trailed by only six (47-41) entering the final stanza. But Elma’s shooting went cold while Forks padded its lead from the foul line.

Elma’s Cody Vollan erupted for 33 points. Cobey Moore contributed nine rebounds, three rebounds and three assists. Carter Jacobson also had nine rebounds.

“Turnovers tell a big part of the story. We turned it over 27 times; them 19,” Elma coach Jeff Niemi summarized. “We did outrebound them (26-25), which was a big part of our game-planning. Very proud of the kids to battle back and make it a game for 3 1/2 quarters.”

The Eagles (2-3, 3-14) travel to Hoquiam on Wednesday.
