Aberdeen’s Sundstrom wins Outlaw Tuners main event.

Saturday at Grays Harbor Raceway

ELMA — Aberdeen driver Tyler Sundstrom increased his points lead by capturing the Outlaw Tuners main event on Aug. 26 at Grays Harbor Raceway.

Ryan Martinez of Portland won the PHRA Dwarf Car’s annual Pocket Change race. Veteran Cosmopolis driver Tom Sweatman prevailed in the Modified classification, while Reece Goetz of Snohomish won the 360 Sprint Car feature.

Outlaw Tuners

Sundstrom exchanged leads with Devon Harper of Olympia.

Shelton’s Dale Speas tracked down Harper and passed him for second. Trevor Dugent wound up third.

Dwarf Cars

The final Dwarf Car race of the season proved to be a thriller, with Martinez outdueling defending champion Corey Estaban of Gaston, Ore. A $2,044 purse, one of the biggest payouts of the year, included $1,444 in pocket change.

Estaban slipped past Martinez on the 16th lap and started to put some distance between the two drivers. But both encountered lapped traffic and Martinez slipped to the inside to take over the lead on turn four heading to the white flag.

The pair raced side-by-side throughout the final lap, with Martinez holding off Estaban by three-hundredths of a second. Josh King of Red Bluff, Calif., was third.

Modifieds

Sweatman waited out several caution flags to take the checkered flag.

Hard contact between Hoquiam driver Jason Tole and Shane Rau of Shelton brought out the red flag on the 13th lap. Both drivers walked away from the accident without evident injuries.

In the lead prior to the accident, Sweatman timed his restart perfectly and pulled away from his pursuers. Scott Miller of Shelton took a close race for second, with Kyler Moore of Seabeck placing third.

360 Sprints

Occupying the front row with his brother, Chase, Reece Goetz pulled away from Cam Smith of Mill Creek at the midway point of what proved to be a caution-free main event.

Lapped traffic became a minor factor late in the going, but Goetz maneuvered through it for the win. Smith was second and Quilcene driver J.J. Hickle placed third.

Sunday’s program includes the Summer Thunder Sprint Series, in addition to racing in the Modified and Midget classification. The gates will open at 5:30 p.m., with racing scheduled for 7.

The Outlaws will take to the track on Labor Day. Street Stocks will help fill out the program. The first race is again scheduled for 7, but the gates will open 30 minutes earlier at 5 p.m.
