Longtime McCleary city attorney Dan Glenn retires

Plans to continue serving other municipalities and clients

Longtime city attorney for the City of McCleary, Dan Glenn, has retired from his position. Sharon English has been appointed as his replacement.

Glenn remains the city attorney for other municipalities in Grays Harbor County. In the past, he had served as city attorney for the City of Montesano for 40 years before retiring from that position in August 2015. He has served the city of Elma for 44 years and Oakville for nearly 40 years.

He has served as city attorney for the city of McCleary for about 36 years.

“As I did when I ended my representation of Montesano, it is not a retirement ‘retirement’ but a ‘transitioning’ through which I am working,” Glenn said. “I have enjoyed and do enjoy representing the cities, so it is hard to recognize that I am a bit more mature than most fellow members of the Bar.”

Glenn was admitted to the Bar in October 1972.

Serving as municipal attorney for three and four cities hasn’t always been easy.

“My spouse, Carleen, spent eight nights a month at home waiting for me to return from a council meeting. She was and is very tolerant, and I am very fortunate,” Glenn said. “You make the commitment to represent the city, and you must honor that regardless of the time involved.”

He was recognized by the McCleary City Council on April 25. When asked later about special memories, Glenn focused on the people he served.

“The special memories relate to working with and enjoying the association with the very nice people who care a great deal about the cities whose citizens employ them,” Glenn said.

Glenn plans to continue representing clients, but one fewer municipality under his watch means more time at home. He plans to enjoy that time.

“(I plan) to take more trips to locations near and far, and when winter comes, spending more time at our homes in Arizona and Hawaii,” Glenn said. “Thus, we will be honoring more fully the phrase that is placed at the bottom of my office’s stationery, ‘carpe diem.’”

Glenn’s last day with McCleary was April 30.

English’s 1-year contract was approved by the McCleary City Council on April 25.

She is an attorney for Younglove and Coker of Olympia. English has a law degree from Seattle University. She has served as a deputy prosecuting attorney for both Lewis and Thurston counties. Her practice includes employment and labor law, estate planning and probate, real property law, administrative law and general civil litigation.

English has served as a prosecutor for Montesano, Elma, McCleary and Shelton, and she has filled in as city attorney for Glenn when he’s been away in the past.
