Dent will challenge Schiller for McCleary mayoral race

Dent to run again after resigning as mayor in October 2015

Candidate filing week was May 15-19 in Grays Harbor County. Here are notable filings:

Former McCleary mayor Donald Gary Dent has filed to run against Mayor Brent Schiller.

Schiller was appointed as mayor after Dent abruptly resigned in October 2015 citing “bickering” and undisclosed health concerns.

The months leading to Dent’s resignation saw his leadership clouded in several high-profile controversies. The city received findings from the state Auditor’s Office, one for “illegal” use of funds from the city’s light and power fund, and Dent attempted to launch a lawsuit against his entire city council for attempting to undermine his authority, going so far as to have the council served with legal paperwork.

Shortly before his resignation, the city council unanimously stated a lack of confidence in Dent during a special meeting.

But Dent also has more than 20 years experience leading the city, first winning election as mayor in 1976.

Jared Berkn also filed for the city’s top position late on Friday.

Treasurer

Montesano’s Ken Albert has filed for the Grays Harbor County Treasurer position.

Albert was appointed to the position in 2016 after the retirement of longtime Treasurer Ron Strabbing. Albert is filing to be elected to the 1 year remaining on Strabbing’s term. If Albert chooses to seek a full term, he’ll have to file to run again next year.

Elma

In Elma, three city council positions are up for election (positions one, two and three). All three incumbents — Pat Miller, Elma dentist Dr. David Blackett and Tom Boling — have filed for re-election.

Elroy Papke has filed to challenge Blackett. Papke had filed for the mayoral seat in 2015 but ultimately was eliminated during the primary.

None of those positions have enough candidates to be on the primary ballot.

McCleary

Also in McCleary, four city council positions are up for election.

Only Ben Blankenship is seeking re-election for council position four. Larry Peterson, Pam Ator and Dustin Richey all have not filed for re-election.

Three people have filed for position three — Eric Hart, Jaron Heller and Odd DeBakker. That position will go to Primary ballots if no candidate withdraws.

For position four, Blankenship is being challenged by John Dunning.

Position two will see Brycen Huff and Gary Atkins vying for the seat.

Joy Iversen is running unopposed for position five.

Montesano

In Montesano, four positions are up for election.

Incumbents Clint Bryson, Ian Cope and Tyler Trimble all have filed for re-election. Bryson is unchallenged.

For position two, Cope will be challenged by Barry Iverson. Iverson unsuccessfully ran for a council seat against Nikki Hutchinson-King in 2015.

Trimble, who holds position six, is being challenged by Ray Meyers.

Robert Hatley and Kim Cristobal will vie for position three.

Oakville

Oakville has the city’s top seat and a council position open.

Keith Francis has filed to run for mayor, and John Ruymann has filed for the position five council seat. Both are unopposed.

Hospital District 1

Hospital District 1 position 1 will go to primary ballots with three candidates filing. Carolyn Wescott and Georgette Beerbower Hiles, both of Elma, and Otis Leathers of McCleary all are seeking the position.

East County School Districts

In McCleary, both candidates are running unopposed. Sarah Kinney has filed for the School 65 Director District 2 position, and Mark D. Duncan has filed for the director District 3 position.

In Montesano, three candidates are running unopposed. Moraya Wilson is seeking the district one seat, Chris Thomas district two, and Tiffany Schweppe, district four.

In Elma, only one of the three available school district positions will see a race. Larry Bridenback and Chad Searls both are seeking the district one seat.

Rick Gravatt is seeking the district two seat, and Teresa Boling is seeking the district 5 seat.

Shawna Williams and Terri Carl are both running unopposed for Satsop School Board positions.

Fire Districts

While several fire districts have positions up for election, of significant note is Fire District 5 which will go to the Primary in August.

Liisa Mayberry, Eric L. Patton and Dave Hauge have all filed for the Fire District 5 position one seat.
