Native plants take root at local gardening class, Nov. 5

WSU Master Gardeners

The Vidette

WSU Master Gardeners of Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties will present a class about “Landscaping with Native Plants,” on Saturday, Nov. 5.

The class will be held 10 a.m. to noon at the wheelchair-accessible WSU Extension office, located at the Grays Harbor County Fairgrounds in Elma. The class is free, and no preregistration is required.

Participants will be taught an understanding of what defines a plant as a native, and they will learn advantages of using natives in Pacific Northwest landscapes, including using them to solve common garden problems. People also will learn about assessing qualities for choosing the right plants for the right place in the landscape. Both coastal and inland soil and growing conditions will be addressed.

Resources will be shared about where and how to obtain native plants, including information on the Native Plant Society of Washington and the Native Plant Salvage organization. There will be plant specimens on hand and a “virtual tour” of magnificent native plants of the Pacific Northwest.

The presentation will be followed by a plant clinic, a half hour after the class. (People are asked to bring specimens of a problem plant if they plan to ask questions.)
