Grange foundation scholarships

The Washington State Grange Foundation is awarding $12,750 in scholarships to high school seniors and college students. The scholarships, ranging from $750 to $1,000 each, are offered to assist Grange members and their children. Recipients are:

Kendall Harner received the Fidelity Grange Scholarship in the amount of $750. The daughter of Dan and Lisa Harner, Kendall has been a member of Olympic View Grange for five years. A seventh-degree Grange member, Kendal also served as a delegate at the 2017 State Grange Convention. She is a 2017 graduate of Elma High School and is currently attending Grays Harbor College with an undecided major. She holds the office of Ceres in Olympic View Grange and Gatekeeper in the Grays Harbor/Pacific Pomona Grange. Kendall is involved with several Grange fundraising events, volunteers in various departments at the Grays Harbor County Fair and has been a first-place winner in the State Grange Baking Contest.

Kennedy Gwin is the recipient of the McCleary Grange Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. She is the daughter of Jerry Gwin and Tammy Gwin-Cork. She and her father are members of Humptulips Grange. Kennedy is studying political science and global studies at Pacific Lutheran University. She will be studying at Oxford University in England this fall. Kennedy is the Lady Assistant Steward at Humptulips Grange and the Family Living Chair for Grays Harbor/Pacific Pomona Grange. She served as the 2016 Washington State Grange Youth Ambassador and went on to be named 2017 National Grange Youth Ambassador. Kennedy was a member of the 2017 State and National Grange Convention Rose Drill Team. She works as a dormitory resident assistant at PLU and spent part of her 2017 summer as an intern at the National Grange Office in Washington, D.C.

Mackenzie Raney has been awarded the Pomona Villa Scholarship in the mount of $750. The daughter of Melissa Raney, Mackenzie is a seventh-degree member of the Olympic View Grange. Mackenzie is a 2017 graduate of East Grays Harbor High School who is currently studying automotive technology at Grays Harbor College. She participates in Grange fundraising activities and helps set up the Grange displays at the county fair. She volunteers at an automotive shop and does vehicle maintenance in her spare time.

Jesse Thompson will receive the $750 Riverview Grange Scholarship. Jesse, the daughter of Tracey Thompson and Ronda Morris, is a member of Humptulips Grange. She will graduate in June as valedictorian of Wishkah Valley High School and then study pre-medicine at Washington State University. Jesse is active on the Twin Valley Equestrian Team and served as the ASB Vice President. She has worked as a horseback tour guide on the beach. Her service projects include assisting with several horse-related events and volunteering with the American Red Cross blood drive.

Josie Emery was awarded the $1,000 Ray and Marian Kamerrer Memorial Scholarship. Josie is the daughter of Clayton and Kelly Emery and is a member of Humptulips Grange. She is graduating in June from Hoquiam High School and plans to attend Central Washington University to study clinical physiology. Josie is a high school cheerleader and is on the golf and volleyball teams. She was a member of the Rose Drill Team at the 2017 State Grange Convention. Coming from a timber industry family, Josie has represented that industry as a member of the Hoquiam Loggers Playday Court. She was recently recognized as one of two Students of the Year at Hoquiam High School.
