Twin Harborites produce 18 titles at subregional wrestling

Aberdeen girls win team title; 18 wrestlers win subregionals

CENTRALIA — Aberdeen’s girls romped to a third successive team championship and 18 Twin Harborites won titles in the District IV multi-classification subregional wrestling tournaments on Saturday, Feb. 3, at Centralia’s Northwest Sports Hub.

The Bobcats scored 379 1/2 points to blow away their competition in the girls teams standings.

Winning five individual titles, Montesano placed second to Forks in the Class 1A boys competition. The Spartans used their depth to amass 447 points. The Bulldogs had 324 1/2. Hoquiam placed third with 220 1/2.

Individual girls champions included Aberdeen’s Faith Cardenas, Savannah Chandler, Mackayla Waltee and sisters Karli and Tatum Heikkila, Hoquiam’s Mercedes Pinnell and North Beach’s Natasha Fruh.

On the boys side, Aberdeen’s Edgar Salazar and Tyler Souphommanichanh, Montesano’s Ty Ekerson, Tony Williams, Carson Klinger, Kai Olson and Tanner Rossmaier, Hoquiam’s Alex Houbregs, Elma’s Justin Sample, Raymond’s Tristan Hamlin and Ocosta’s Hayden Hoff won their weight classes.

The top four at each weight advance to regionals in the 2A and 1A boys and girls competition. The top six wrestlers per weight earn direct regional berths in the 2B classification, with the seventh finisher advancing to a regional-qualifying (or “pigtail”) match at regionals.

Aberdeen will host the girls regionals on Saturday at Sam Benn Gym. The 2A boys regionals are at Tumwater, the 1A regionals at Klahowya in Silverdale and the B regionals at Kalama.

Qualifers from those tourneys move on to Mat Classic Feb. 16-17 in the Tacoma Dome.

GIRLS

Winning five titles, the Bobcats will be represented in regionals at home by a 15-woman contingent.

Cardenas finished off Centralia’s Taryn Salazar in 2:53 of the 100-pound final to capture her third successive subregional title. Chandler needed 2:59 to pin Tenino’s Natalie Dodge in the 145-pound final.

Waltee pinned teammate Thalia Cook in 1:47 of the 155-pound final.

Karli Heikkila won by fall over Centralia’s Jakayla Shipe in 2:31 of the 170-pound final. Her younger sister Tatum led Raymond’s Johanna Crow, 10-2, late in the second round of the 190-pound title match when Crow was unable to continue following a takedown.

“Another impressive performance by a great group of girls,” Bobcat coach Craig Yakovich said. “We’ve been tough to beat all year and it showed again today.”

Hoquiam’s Pinnell pinned Aberdeen’s Alexie Darst in 5:05 at 120 pounds.

North Beach’s Fruh needed only 54 seconds to pin Carlina Portugal of Black Hills at 235 pounds.

BOYS

Class 1A

Tony Williams and Carson Klinger returned from injury to add to Montesano’s title harvest.

Williams pinned teammate Brent Hollatz in 1:17 of the 145-pound division. Klinger followed with a pin over Hoquiam’s Brady Cummings in 1:50 of the 152-pound title bout.

Montesano’s Ekerson won by forfeit over teammate Aaron Lano at 113 pounds. Olson decisioned Forks’ Shane Queen, 3-2, in the 170-pound final.

Perhaps the tourney’s feel-good story, however, was turned in by Montesano’s Tanner Rossmaier, who won his first-even tourney title by pinning Tenino’s Brian Christman with only 37 seconds remaining in the 182-pound title bout.

“It was a great team effort,” Monte coach Jeff Klinger said, “the best we’ve wrestled this year.”

Hoquiam’s Houbregs prevailed in a classic double-overtime battle with Forks’ Cru Demorest at 120 pounds.

After regulation ended at 1-1, Demorest registered an escape in the first OT session. But Houbregs scored a reversal in the second OT to nab a 3-2 victor.

Elma state veteran Sample, as expected, prevailed at 138. He won by injury default over Hoquiam’s Antonio Garcia.

Heavyweight A.J. Hernandez nearly produced a second Elma title. He lost in double overtime to Forks’ Nathan Flores.

Elma coach Adam Catterlin was pleased with his team’s showing.

“All of our upper-weight guys are first-year wrestlers and for them to advance is awesome,” he said.
