Prep Roundup: Several local golf, soccer and volleyball teams open 2018 season

Elma’s Brooke Sutherby scores two goals in win over Aberdeen

It was a busy afternoon for Twin Harbors prep sports teams as several local golf, soccer and volleyball teams opened their respective seasons on Tuesday.

GIRLS PREP SOCCER

Elma 4, Aberdeen 2

Elma’s Brooke Sutherby scored two goals as the Eagles scored early and never relinquished the lead in a 4-2 victory on Tuesday at Stewart Field.

Sutherby got the scoring started in the third minute when she got by the defense and sent a shot from inside the 18-yard box over the head of Aberdeen keeper Logan Glanz for a 1-0 lead.

Kassedy Olson got another tally for the Eagles in the 21st minute when her shot from the right side of the box snuck inside the far post to give Elma a 2-0 lead going into halftime.

“In the first half we were crisp, we were clean and the passing was there and we possessed the ball,” Eagles coach Scott Rockey said. “We moved through the middle and played it ahead but we need to work on our conditioning. In the last half of the first half the girls got sloppy and out of position.”

Elma added another goal in the 50th minute from Sutherby to go up 3-0, but Aberdeen showed signs of life with a goal of its own in the 52nd minute when Abby Bradt beat Elma keeper Hollie Ray to make it a 3-1 match.

Elma’s Jillian Bieker found some room just a few steps inside the box and ripped a shot toward the upper right hand corner of the goal to put the game out of reach at 4-1 in the 60th minute.

Emma Green scored the Bobcats’ second goal on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute to round out the scoring.

Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming believes his team will learn from the loss.

“They think they know what varsity will be like but they don’t,” he said. “Varsity speed is a lot different than (recreation) soccer and junior varsity. This helps them get a good idea of what it’s going to be like.”

Montesano 3, Tumwater 1

Montesano emphasized slowing down one of Tumwater’s best players and found a way to get its own offense going in the Bulldog’s 3-1 road win over Tumwater on Tuesday at Tumwater High School.

Monte (2-0) struck first in the 15th minute with a goal off the foot of Zoee Lisherness when she got her shot around defenders and inside the far post.

The Bulldogs’ Anna Ayres got her team on the board in the 30th minute when she received a through ball from Jaieden Morrison and converted on the one-on-one opportunity.

When Tumwater made the game close with a goal in the 50th minute, Glory Grubb gave the team some breathing room when her shot from the left side of the box found the right side of the net past the keeper.

Monte head coach Fidel Sanchez was pleased with the offense but was really impressed with the way his team kept the Thunderbirds from establishing their offense.

“We played very well defensively against a really good offensive team. It was a great night from Sophie Barre, who marked up on (Tumwater’s) Hallie Bergford; she was player of the night,” he said.

Montesano will try to keep the winning streak going against Aberdeen at 7 p.m., on Thursday Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. at Stewart Field.
