Monte’s Albert wins 400 at Battle Ground track

BATTLE GROUND — Montesano’s Donovan Albert won the boys 400 meters in Battle Ground’s Tiger Invitational on March 24.

Competing almost exclusively against upper-classification schools, the Bulldog boys placed 10th overall. Camas swept boys and girls team honors.

Albert was clocked in 51.76 to beat his nearest rival, Camas’ Mason Gross, by nearly a second.

The Montesano senior joined Bryce Whipple, Colby Adams and Brennen Wolcott on a boys 4×400-meter relay team that finished second. With a time of 3:41.3, the Bulldogs trailed winning Camas by close to six seconds.

Whipple, Albert, Wolcott and Gage Iverson combined to run sixth in the boys 4×100 relay (46.03).

Montesano’s Tanner Nicklas was second in the boys shot put with a throw of 45-3. Skyview’s Taylor Vo won the event at 45-7 3/4.

Carly Spradlin was the top finisher among Monte’s girls. She was sixth in the javelin (99-7) and seventh in the discus (97-8).

Bulldogs sweep

MONTESANO — Host Montesano swept Hoquiam in an Evergreen 1A dual track meet on March 21 at Rottle Field.

The Bulldogs trounced the inexperienced Grizzly boys, 116-24. Monte’s girls also prevailed, 74-59.

Montesano’s Tanner Nicklas was a double winner in the boys shot put in discus. His 45-1 1/2 mark in the shot — which narrowly bested Hoquiam’s Caleb Larsen — represented a PR by three feet. Larsen’s 45-foot throw was also a PR.

Sam Winter captured both hurdles and the triple jump. Donovan Albert (200 and 400 meters) and Bryce Whipple (100 and javelin) were also two-time individual winners for the Bulldogs.

Alma Muro (sprints), Zoee Lisherness (hurdles) and Elizabeth Peterson (middle distances) were double winners for Monte’s girls.

Bulldog girls coach Doug Schupbach also cited the performances of Whipple (who was making his competitive debut), Gage Iverson and Madison Schupbach.

“We didn’t get wet and the kids had good performances with the field and running events,” Coach Schupbach said.

Hoquiam coach Tim Pelan cited Larsen, Sharaya Brydon, Alex Tomko and Taylor Strom for strong showings.

“I’m proud of the kids with how well they competed,” Pelan said. “We are young and inexperienced and it’s early in the year, but they competed.”
