Montesano 10, Tenino 8

Montesano overcame a four-run deficit in the seventh inning to earn a 10-8 victory over the Tenino Beavers on Monday in Tenino.

Down 7-3 in the last inning, Montesano, which had managed just four hits against Tenino starting pitcher Logan Brewer, started to rally. The Bulldogs opened the inning with a single by Teegan Zillyett followed by Evan Bates’ walk, chasing Brewer from the mound.

Tenino turned to Shawn Nicholson to relieve Brewer, but the freshman had trouble finding the strike zone, walking three straight to make it a 7-5 ballgame.

After striking out Montesano’s Carter Olson, Nicholson walked Braden Dohrmann, bringing the Bulldogs to within a run at 7-6.

Monte’s Aaron Lano then hit a fielder’s choice groundout which resulted in Shaydon Farmer being out at home.

Parker Plato then singled on a 3-1 pitch to center field, scoring Cyrus Parsons to tie the game.

But Monte’s offense wasn’t done yet. Zillyett, hitting for the second time in the inning, followed with a line-drive single to chase Dohrmann and Lano home, giving Monte its first lead at 9-7.

Plato then scored on a passed ball to extend Monte’s lead to 10-7.

The Beavers threatened to score in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with no outs. But Montesano reliever Payson Parker worked out of the jam, allowing just one run on a hit batsman to secure the 10-8 victory.

Montesano head coach Mike Osgood praised his Bulldogs for their persistence against a good pitcher who was on his game.

“Logan Brewer pitched a great game. … He kept us from getting comfortable in the box and had us looking at too many third strikes,” Osgood said. “Our guys kept battling and were finally able to put together a big inning.”

Cole Daniels earned the victory for Monte, allowing one hit and no runs in three innings.

“I was really pleased with Cole Daniels’ three innings of relief,” Osgood said. “He kept us in the game and gave us a chance to come back.”

Monte starter Ben Wills took a no decision. Wills allowed six earned runs on five hits over the first three innings.

With the victory, Montesano moved a half-game ahead of idle Hoquiam in the 1A Evergreen League, but the two teams faced off Tuesday. That game ended too late to make this edition.

Montesano 17, Rainier 1

Montesano benefited from stingy pitching and an explosive second inning to earn a 17-1 victory over Rainier on Friday in Rainier.

Three Montesano pitchers — Trace Ridgway, Jack Anderson and Evan Bates — combined to allow just three hits with nine strikeouts and no walks. The Bulldogs pitching staff has not walked a batter in four consecutive games.

Ridgway picked up the win, allowing no runs on one hit with three strikeouts.

Monte punished Rainier pitchers, scoring 17 runs on 16 hits, including a 12-run second inning highlighted by Parker Plato’s grand slam home run.

Plato went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and six RBI.

Carter Olson and Aaron Lano each had three-hit games for the Bulldogs. Olson went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and three RBI while Lano went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

“It was a well played game for us in all three phases of the game,” Monte head coach Mike Osgood said. “We pitched well, hit well and played well on defense. … Our pitchers are doing a great job attacking the zone and pitching ahead of batters.”

Elma splits twin bill with Forks

The Elma Eagles split a doubleheader with the Forks Spartans in Elma on Friday, winning the first game 2-1 followed by a 6-4 loss in the nightcap.

Game 1: Elma 2, Forks 1

The Eagles rallied to score two runs in the bottom of the sixth en route to a 2-1 victory over the Spartans in the first game of a doubleheader.

Forks got on the board in the first inning, scoring a run on a fielder’s choice ground out by Joesph Reaume.

The score remained 1-0 as the two starting pitchers — Elma’s Brady Shriver and Forks’ Carter Windle — shut down the opposing offense.

Elma finally broke the goose egg in the bottom of the sixth. Shriver led off the inning with a single and later advanced to third on a Forks error by shortstop Dalton Kilmer.

Tysen Richardson chased Shriver home with a sacrifice fly one batter later.

After a one-out walk to Elma’s Justin Elliott, Carter Jacobson hit a ground ball to Spartans second baseman Logan Urving, who committed an error on the play, allowing Raiden Aho to score the go-ahead run.

That was all Shriver would need, as a half-inning later the senior got Windle to ground into a game-ending double play to secure the victory.

Shriver allowed just one earned run on five hits in the complete-game performance, striking out five in the process.

“I thought Brady Shriver threw a great game and I thought defensively we were outstanding,” Elma head coach Jim Hill said of the Game 1 victory. “Brody Rustemeyer played a great defensive game at shortstop.”

Game 2: Forks 6, Elma 4

The Eagles were unable to recover from Forks’ four-run first inning as Elma fell 6-4 in the nightcap.

Forks got to Elma staring pitcher Brody Rustemeyer early, scoring four runs in the first inning, capped by Trey Baysinger’s two-run single to give the Spartans a 4-0 lead.

Down 5-1 entering the bottom of the fifth, Elma responded with three runs to climb back into the game, cutting the deficit to 5-4 when Cobey Moore walked to force in a run.

But that was as close as Elma would get to a doubleheader sweep, as Forks scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh and held Elma scoreless to earn the 6-4 victory.

Rustemeyer took the loss, allowing four earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts in an inning pitched.

Moore pitched six innings of relief for Elma, allowing an earned run on three hits with five strikeouts.
