Samantha Stanfield’s goal early in the second half enabled Montesano to edge defensive-minded Hoquiam, 1-0, in an Evergreen 1A League contest on Oct. 19 at Rottle Field.

The league champion Bulldogs (7-0, 12-1-1) dominated time of possession. But packing in their defense, the Grizzlies (2-4, 4-9-1) were able to prevent Montesano from launching many quality shots.

“Hoquiam did a good job of packing everybody in and clearing the ball with one big kick,” Monte coach Fidel Sanchez said. “That disrupted everything we did because we had to reset every single time. That was their plan and they did it very well…But it was important for our seniors to go out with a win on Senior Night.”

“We definitely worked out butts off,” Hoquiam coach Drew Grannemann said.

About two minutes into the second half, Stanfield put in the rebound of a Hollie Stubb shot that hit the crossbar.

Montesano defenders Hannah Barre and Katie Granstrom were cited by Sanchez for fine performances.

Grannemann cited Kayla Delahanty for marking up effectively on Stanfield. Grizzly defender Kylee Bagwell was also commended for fine play.

On Tuesday, Montesano was scheduled to visit Forks. Results from that match were not available when The Vidette went to press.
