Monte suffers shorthanded defeats

Fatigue slows Bulldogs

MONTESANO — Short-handed Montesano maintained its stamina long enough to play to a scoreless tie with King’s Way Christian in a non-league match March 16 at Rottle Field.

Although still not at full strength and playing their second match in as many nights, the Bulldogs surprisingly fared better in the second half.

“I was a little worried in the first half,” Monte coach Rick Denholm said. “Our touches were off and that’s sometimes a sign that you’re tied. In the second half, our touches were better. We started connecting on passes and gave us more scoring opportunities.”

He cited midfielders Jordan King and Robert Thomas, plus senior Maurillio Hernandez (who played both as a goalkeeper and in the field) for fine play.

Wolves 7, Bulldogs 1

MONTESANO — Again short-handed, Montesano squad struggled with fatigue in the second half and fell to Black Hills 7-1 at home on March 15.

With some players out of town and unavailable for the match, the Bulldogs only dressed 12 players.

Monte’s Ben Royer tallied a goal on a free kick that he placed in the upper right-hand corner of the goal to bring the score to 2-1 in the 40th minute.

But with the Bulldogs lacking reserves, Black Hills scored five unanswered goals and buried Monte in the second half.

Monte head coach Rick Denholm said his team didn’t have the energy to keep the game close in the second half.

“They scored three goals after halftime and we looked tired,” Denholm said. “As the game went on we got tired and our touches weren’t as good. I was happy that the team continued to play all the way through the game.”

The Bulldogs face King’s Way Christian at home tonight.
